I am Rachel. I am 23. I am from Minnesota, and I am in love with the midwest. My husband and I just moved in with my parents. We used to live in South Dakota, but we have made some big choices that have led us back home: I am applying for graduate school to study Literature, and we are leaving in November for six months in New Zealand.
To me, words and sentences form pieces of puzzles that can be moved and manipulated to create, render, and stir from within us beauty, truth, and wisdom.

My favorite place to be is ‘on the way’–coming or going, it doesn’t matter. By boat, plane, car, or train… If I could distend time, I would be always in motion.

Rachel:
Found your blog as I was wandering around the internet looking for Hemingway. I’m born and raised in California, but spend a month or so each year on my motorcycle wandering around the US. I have come to love the Midwest as well. Can’t explain it really, but I know that I always enjoy my time riding just about anywhere in the Midwest.
I enjoyed your Hemingway post from last year. I too have thought much that perhaps I shouldn’t like his writings the more I learned of his life and some of the macho crap he wrote about. Like you, I realized after a time that it was his writing. His eye for the grittiness of his male ego and plopping it down on the page in a way that sometimes makes us sick, sometimes gives us glimpses into his soft, scared center. There is a reason he is so widely touted as America’s best writer. I believe it is because he showed us things in well-described common language that we didn’t always want to see, but were made to feel.
Good blog, by the way. Thanks for sharing.

I love reading your blogs. Have I ever mentioned that. Your use of the English language is so evocative. Hope you’re having a great time in New Zealand Xxxx
